What do you guys use to do live shows? I used to have a big rig with a dat, a few synths, and some fx processors. I am now using a mac laptop with pro tools. Some of my friends are using abelton. I have some shows coming up and want to try a new set up. Any suggestions?

Re: What do you use to PA?
Thu, November 17, 2005 - 2:36 PMThanks for the info. I will check into those programs. The cd idea sounds cool, but I want to start doing more live improvization and playing of keys.
I will do some experimentation and tell you what I find.

Re: What do you use to PA?
Thu, November 17, 2005 - 4:28 PMAzul is be total improv throw down, but sometimes over insert of cdj info, often as inserts or bridges to reference defined groove genre...all sequenced info is composed, arranged and programmed in jazz standard form no matter what neck of the genre woods it comes from to framework focus but not inhibit interpretation -

Re: What do you use to PA?
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 9:36 AMI use a laptop running cubase sx.
the back ground tracks are all flat but I get the midi time code from cubase and ad lib with keys and the arpeggiator off the Roland MC505. Also have the whole arrangement going through a Korg Electribe Entrancer. It's got some great sound effects on it. Did the whole midi thing for quite a while having a synth just for bass, drum machine, leads, etc... but found the analogs going out of key so much and it's so hard to get the bassline punched up and things to sit tight without alot of outboard for compressing. Had to scale it down quite a bit, when given about the same amount of space as a dj setup. I have a cd backup playing in case the laptop goes down (haven't had to switch over, knock on wood) anyways, hope this finds you well.
smiles.

I have a couple of live sets there for downloading.

Re: What do you use to PA?
Sun, December 11, 2005 - 4:42 AMSo you use an Entrancer on only audio? Interesting, many VJ's use it for only video, but it does both...
Re: What do you use to PA?
If I wasn't doing the videos for the show, ;-)
I'd be using an Electribe! which some people hate on,
but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a transforming, improv instrument
(shameless plug) -> tribes.tribe.net/electribe
or else a Powrbook with ableton. A fine program
(what up, Dyl?)

Re: What do you use to PA?
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 12:41 AMIt's a good idea to have a CD player handy in case you have gear problems. You can have a CD of minimal or whatever stuff you make to use as backup while you figure out why nothing is coming out of your sampler or whatever. This is more important when you are playing alone. For live/improv I love electribe drum machines, electrix effects processors and my Triton.

Re: What do you use to PA?
Sat, December 10, 2005 - 6:51 PM"I burn cd dub plates of any sequenced arrangements and run them on cdj, currently use a pioneer cdj200..."
I'm not trying to hate, but CD's ARE NOT DUBPLATES. I do live sets too, off a laptop, but I recognize that a dubplate is the antithesis of digital. It just bugs me when people say this. A dubplate is a specific thing and it is very much a part of many musical traditions (dub, jungle). Calling a CD a dubplate really cheapens the culture of those musical styles. Nothing wrong with using CD's in your live set, or a DJ set, just don't try and make it more credible by calling them something they're not. End of petty rant. -

Re: What do you use to PA?
Mon, December 12, 2005 - 3:24 PMit was a good rant though, but I actually burn the pieces as if they were a white label dub plate...and have been listening to dub, and jungle, now there is a questionable term at best, for a while on vinyl as well as CD, dub for thirty years for sure, to me the medium is not an issue, the nature and purpose is the defining factor, oh hey, that's not an album! It's a CD! oh yeah, and drum machines and electronic bass will never catch on....and certainly never be accepted in place of organic analog recorded live players...hmmm, heh, anyway, I do try to give honor and respect where and when due...meanwhile keep the groove on the go.... -

Re: What do you use to PA?
Mon, December 12, 2005 - 8:37 PMAs I said before, I ain't trying to hate. I know it's not really important, but i'm just a weirdo about certain things. So with that disclaimer: a WHITE LABEL isn't a dubplate either!! A dubplate is a specific thing. It's an acetayte test press. It's not vinyl. Of course anyone can see the intent is the same. But if you go tell some jungle or dub dj that your CD is a dubplate, they'll definitely give you a weird look. And IMO, rightfully so. Because the sound of dubplates, the tradition of cutting them, is an old and respected tradition. But I know it's all semantics! No one's gonna' die or cry if people use different terminology!! I'm just being picky, but trying to set the record straight. PEACE!!

Re: What do you use to PA?
Tue, January 24, 2006 - 9:33 PMI use a Mac Powerbook running Abelton Live, a Jomox Airbase 99 and a Monomachine. The monomachine is new and I'm still getting used to it, but I have to say it's becoming the most important part of my live set. The machine fucken rocks! -

Re: What do you use to PA?
Thu, April 12, 2007 - 9:12 AMWhat's Up?
I play a V-Drum/Pearl/Zildjian hybrid kit. I sequence using A-Live and a Mactop (Presonus Firebox interface) which runs three stereo Audio channels and Midi to a Micro-Korg, Handsonic, and an E-mu sampler. Most of my other Synths, Basslines, and Percussion I do at home and have in Jazzy (mactop), so I don't have to lug out more synths. I use an Oxygen to trigger A-Live. I've got a few effects boxes, which anything can utilize to sweeten the sound. All of the audio goes through a Mackie 20EFX board. Charis uses a AKG Mic with a Alesis Midi-Verb unit. Unfortuately, it takes an hour straight to set up, but worth it.
I like A-Live because I can arrange an hour plus set, with multiple trax, and then mix em up however desired, as most of the loops work together, unless key related.
I like spontaneous development of Live sets! No sets the same twice!
